Auricular therapy, also known as ear acupuncture, is an alternative medicine approach aimed at treating a variety of physical, mental, and emotional conditions by stimulating specific points on the ear. Unlike traditional ear acupuncture, auriculotherapy does not involve the use of needles; instead, it relies on nerve connections.
During auriculotherapy sessions, a micro-current stimulator is gently applied to particular reflex points on the outer ear. These points then send signals to the brain corresponding to the specific area or function being targeted for treatment. Most individuals undergoing this therapy experience only a mild tingling sensation at these reflex points.
This technique, which is both safe and effective, employs micro-current stimulation on the outer ears to restore balance and normalize various physiological and psychological functions. Each point on the ear is believed to correspond to different parts of the body, affiliated to the principles of acupuncture.
How does Auricular Therapy work?
Imagine your outer ear is like a map of your entire body. Auricular therapy works by stimulating specific points on this map, which are believed to be connected to different parts of your body. When these points are stimulated, they send signals to your brain, which can then trigger various responses in your body.
Think of it like pressing buttons that control different functions in your body. By pressing the right buttons (stimulating the right points on your ear), you can potentially help alleviate pain, reduce stress, or even improve overall well-being. It's a bit like using a remote control to adjust the settings on your TV – except in this case, you're adjusting the settings of your body.
While it might sound a bit mysterious, many people find auricular therapy helpful for things like managing pain, quitting smoking, or reducing anxiety.
What conditions can auricular therapy help with?
Auricular therapy can potentially help with a wide range of conditions, including pain management, stress reduction, anxiety, insomnia, addiction (such as smoking cessation), weight loss, and various other physical, mental, and emotional health issues.
What can I expect?
An Auriculotherapy treatment can take 10–20 minutes. You will be lying on your side or back with a comfortable pillow to support your neck. The practitioner will be running a small battery-powered micro-current device around your ear. You will hear a quiet, high-pitch noise. When the practitioner treats an active reflex point that he/she has located, you may feel a sensation of a pulse or a pinprick: This sensation will only last 30– 60 seconds for each point treated. Micro-current is used in preference to needles, acupressure, laser and other forms of current (e.g. TENS), as this best matches the natural frequencies of the nerves being treated. Hence Micro-current is attempting to normalize abnormal nerve activities. The advanced design of the instrument we utilize has the additional advantage of being able to locate the active reflex points, as well as treat.
Is it safe?
Auriculotherapy is generally considered safe when performed by trained and qualified practitioners like the ones at Oasis Chiropractic Center. The stimulation used in auriculotherapy is typically non-invasive and does not involve the use of needles, making it safer for individuals who may be apprehensive about acupuncture.
How often do you need Auricular Therapy?
The frequency of auriculotherapy sessions varies depending on several factors, including the severity and complexity of the health issues being addressed, as well as the number and intensity of active reflex points identified during examination. Dr. Starkman will determine the right course of care for each patient.
For some individuals, auriculotherapy may be utilized as a standalone treatment, while for others, it can be combined effectively with modern chiropractic techniques. Combining these approaches can enhance overall treatment outcomes.
How long does it take to see results?
The timeframe for seeing results from auricular therapy can vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Some people may experience immediate relief or improvements after a single session, while others may require multiple sessions over time to achieve the desired outcome. It's essential to be patient and consistent with your treatment plan.
